I fitted one of these stoves (with no boiler) on our 57′ narrow boat in August 2021. After two years of use (we’re on board most weekends but don’t live aboard), I can heartily recommend it. It’s reliable, very easy to use and looks great.

I bought it because we got fed up with the mess and unpredictability of the boat’s original multi-fuel stove and I’ve never regretted the decision.

Harworths were great to deal with and the stove is very well made. Yes they’re quite expensive compared to a woodburner, but the quality is comparable with our ‘Clearview’ stove at home and that’s a great compliment to them.

It’s worth noting that you need to get the flue hot before the stove runs properly. We had a year of vague diesel fume smells for half an hour or so after lighting it before Harworths advised us that we probably weren’t running it hot enough initially to get it drawing correctly. They were right.

Once it’s warmed up, we never need to turn it up from 1 (minimum) on the control. You do need an anti-downdraught cowl on your chimney if you’re in a windy area. Our marina is always breezy and the flames were much steadier after I fitted one.

I got the optional coal kit with it, but that only works with the stove well turned up and even on its lowest setting, it’s as hot as we need it, so the kit has never been used. I wouldn’t have bothered with it in hindsight. The flame is surprisingly attractive to look at, in case you’re worried you’ll miss the “real fire” experience.

We run the stove on normal red diesel and it’s reasonably economical on that. I’m afraid I can’t tell you what the consumption is because I’ve never checked. All I do know is we tried some “eco diesel” just once and not only was it more expensive to buy, but we had to turn the flow up from 1 to 3 to get the same heat output. Never again.

We have two generic stove fans on it when we’re up, which do make a difference. We take them off overnight and the boat is just right. It’s too hot if we leave them on.

The supplied instructions are good and there’s lots of useful downloads on this website too. As a plumber, I had no real problems fitting it, but you’ll definitely need it doing professionally if you’re not mechanically minded.

To sum up, this is a very impressive stove and has been a great upgrade on our boat.
